Biering-Sørensen test (BST)

The Biering-Sørensen test (BST) is a test to assess the extensor endurance capacity of the trunk muscles.

  • Required material: A physiotherapy couch or a Roman bench.
  • Procedure: The subject is placed in prone position (face down), with the pelvis (anterior superior iliac spine) and the lower limb in contact with the stretcher. The trunk is suspended and horizontal to the floor with arms and hands crossed in contact with the trunk. The test consists of extending the trunk and holding the position for as long as possible.
  • Assessment: It is measured in seconds (sg) and the subject has a maximum of 3 attempts. In Fisicalcoach, you will be able to obtain the best mark, as well as the average or median.

  • Remarks: The pelvis and lower limb can be fixed to the stretcher. To avoid pre-assessment fatigue, subjects can be supported on a complementary chair or bench (illustration A). The upper end of the support should coincide at the sacrolumbar level (illustration B and C).
